Monthly meetings & Area Events

 
Monthly meeting are normally held on the 1st Monday of each month September through April. During the months of May - August we have activities at varies locations. This year all meetings will be held at the College Station Conference Center located on George Bush Drive at 6:15pm. 1/8/07 Special Olympics

Introduction of new board members for the Down Syndrome Support Group of B-CS at 6pm.

 

Come find out more on how to get your children involved with Special Olympics. 

 

When: Monday, January 8, 2007

 

Time: 6:30pm

 

Where: St. Joseph Education Annex, 3030 East 29th Street

 

Patricia Jones, Area 6 Director with Special Olympics Texas will come and speak on Young Athletes Program.  This is a program for 2-7 years olds who train for the Special Olympics but can not compete until 8 years of age.  She will also speak on the how to get your child involved with Special Olympics for ages 8 and above.

 

To be able to participate in Special Olympics you must have Mental Retardation.  Special Olympics was created and developed to give individuals with intellectual disabilities (mental retardation) the opportunity to train and compete in sports activity.

1/23/07 RESOURCE FAIR

On JANUARY 23 from 11am – 1pm Bryan ISD and the Family Support Network will host a RESOURCE FAIR. The fair will be at Hammond Oliver School, 1307 Memorial Dr. Bryan. There will be representatives from many local and state organizations that are of interest to families who have children with disabilities. Bryan ISD will provide lunch for attendees who come to the fair. This is a come and go affair providing families with a way to obtain a lot of information in a quick manner! Reservations are appreciated but not required, RSVP at sharp@tamu.edu

2/5/07 Department of State Health Services

The Family Support Network and the Down Syndrome Support Group will host Bettye Bullock from the Department of State Health Services on Monday, February 5 at 6:30 pm at the College Station Conference Center. Bettye will be able to respond to questions regarding the various plans that DSHS offers and how your child can benefit from these. Presentation on Project Sunshine Buddy program, SPLASH program and SHARE program. Where: College Station Conference Center on George Bush Dr. at 6:15pm. SPLASH - This is an exciting program designed for two purposes: (1) to serve children with special needs and their parents who live in the Brazos County and surrounding areas; and (2) to prepare undergraduate majors in Health and Kinesiology and other related programs in working with children with special needs. S.H.A.R.E. - Special Horses And Riders Excelling. Our primary focus at this time is in providing recreational horseback riding. Riding horses provides increased confidence as well as improving motor and verbal skills. Riding helmets are required and are provided by S.H.A.R.E. Horses eat a lot, so a donation of $10.00 for the first rider, $7.50 for the second rider, and $5.00 per rider thereafter is requested. Family Support Network and Down Syndrome Group of B/CS invites you to the end of school Special Needs Swimming Party. It will be at Hallaran Pool on Rock Praire Road from 10 - Noon. This is the kick off to the beginning of summer. Bring you entire family to this event. You may bring snacks for your family to enjoy(no glass bottles). 9/11/06 Louise Bonneau presents on the Realities of Life as a Student

A unique story of the successes of the educational system

She is a A&M student who grew up as an A&M Consolidated student receiving special services.  She has a disability and will speak on the realities of navigating through the educational system as a student with a disability.  She will be accompanied by her twin sister and mother.  Her sister also attends TAMU and will provide some insight on the perspective of a non-disabled sibling.  Please come out to hear firsthand this unique perspective on disability and how parents can support their child with the educational system.

3rd Annual Buddy Walk Sunday, October 8, 2006 @ College Station Central Park. Get your teams together to support Down syndrome awareness and raise funds for our local group and for research. Down Syndrome Support Group of B-CS 

Fall Picnic

To include slide, swings, sandbox, and a Joy Jump.  We will provide hotdogs and hamburgers. 

It will be from 11am - until everyone leaves.  Please RSVP by November 1st so, we make sure we have enough food.

It will be held at Christy Knight's home located at 2208 Yellowstone, Bryan.

Take Hwy 6 N to Tabor Rd. exit.  Turn left at light.  Go down Wilkes Dr. until you reach blinking light.  Take right onto Old Hearne Rd then take the first left onto Glacier Dr.  go to second left and turn onto Missouri.  This will deadend into Yellowstone Dr.  take a right go past yield sign and it is 2nd house on the left.  If you have any questions feel free to contact me at 979-218-2892.

In case it rains the party will be rescheduled.

Kids will be able to have their photo taken with our esteemed mascot as well as decorate a photo holder for their pictures.  We will also have pizza and games.
